The media habits of twelve different radio format core audiences are examined in the largest technology survey ever conducted for radio. According to Jacobs Media President Fred Jacobs, “The data from Techsurvey8 strongly suggest that focusing on connecting emotionally and meaningfully with listeners is radio’s best avenue toward remaining relevant and vibrant in the face of new digital competition.”

Comprised of data obtained from the largest radio tech study ever conducted (170 stations / 12 formats / 57,000 radio listeners) this special 90 minute Conclave webinar, including a Q&A period, will be packed with details and information crucial to your future.

About Jacobs Media: Jacobs Media is known for the creation of the Classic Rock format. Founded in 1983, Jacobs Media consults leading broadcasting companies in North America and conducts research for both commercial and public radio stations, Arbitron and other organizations and companies. Also, Jacobs Media has become a major player in mobile applications forming jacAPPS in 2008. To date, jacAPPS has developed 530+ apps primarily on the Apple and Android platforms generating more than 13 million downloads.

Conclave webinars are free; however preregistration is required via the Conclave’s website at www.theconclave.com.

The most important benefit gained from radio-enabled cell phones is the ability to receive emergency information regardless of where you are, if you have power or internet connections. The chip doesn’t rely on a wi-fi or 3G/4G connection like popular radio applications, it’s essentially a battery powered radio. And according to the CTIA, the Wireless Association, there are approximately 330 million wireless subscriber connections in the United States.

Radio-enabled cell phones are cheap to produce, an efficient use of spectrum, can help save lives in an emergency and oh, yeah… you get to listen to your favorite stations, too! Read more about the Harris Interactive poll from RBR.com.

Think of a giant, virtual cork board where you can pin all of the things you like. It started with wedding ideas, recipes, interior decorating, clothing, etc. but has blossomed into something much more useful for your station.

Take a gander at this blog entry from Stephanie Winans on RandyLane.net. She goes into some great ways you can get your station onto Pinterest. She suggests that Pinterest shouldn’t be the crux of your online marketing but it certainly has a place. It can be used for posting new music on your station, allowing jocks to interact with listeners, a place to house all of your remote broadcast pictures and locations and much more.

Sign up for Pinterest and check it out. Here’s a good place to start: follow Hot 100.5out of Virginia Beach, VA. They’re putting a lot of the concepts of Stephanie Winans piece to good use. Happy pinning!

WGBH-TV would like to invite you to see a demo of a pilot project WGBH is participating in to test the use of mobile DTV as the next-generation technology for alerting the public during natural and other emergencies.

The Mobile Emergency Alert System (M-EAS) is being developed with PBS, LG Electronics and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), to combine the immediacy and reach of broadcasting with personal mobile devices. We are one of just three states testing the service, and working to develop a template for a national system for all broadcasters, public and commercial.

Mobile EAS is designed to provide vital emergency information – whether for a national emergency, storm warning, or missing children — by delivering video, audio, maps, photos and text directly to any individual’s mobile device, phone, tablet or laptop using a mobile digital TV broadcast. M-EAS will work with existing alert systems as well as new text-based systems planned by mobile carriers. But it enhances these systems by providing rich-media content, such as video, instantly, and it avoids the congestion that cellular networks experience in emergencies.

WGBH-TV will demonstrate the pilot project on Tuesday, March 6 at 10:30am at the WGBH studios at One Guest Street in Brighton, MA.

Please share this invitation with your engineers or others at your station who may be interested in attending. RSVP to jeanne_hopkins@wgbh.org by March 2.

And a note – WGBH will be demonstrating the technology for city and state emergency folks on Monday, March 5, and your news departments will be invited to cover that. Jon Abbott, WGBH President and CEO added, “we hope that our gathering with you on Tuesday, March 6 will allow us to have a deeper discussion from the broadcast perspective.”

Many experts have stated that they don’t expect any of the major television companies to hand over their licenses. Will there be enough participation in an auction to make a difference in either the United States Treasury or broadband services? We’ll have to wait and see.

This article on the Wall Street Journal’s website discusses the recent surge of antenna purchases. Consumers by the thousands are cutting the cord from their cable or satellite company. In exchange, they’re signing up for internet streaming services like Netflix or Hulu and supplementing that with over-the-air TV.

Avner Ronen, CEO of Boxee, another streaming service is quoted as saying, “many consumers don’t realize they can get these channels over the air in HD for free…”

As the battle for viewers rages on and the internet becomes a go-to place for television viewers, maybe it’s a good idea to remind your viewers that your station is there for free!

The study, performed in 2011 by Arbitron, Media Monitors and Coleman Insights shows that on average, 93% of listeners stick around through a commercial break. 93%! Shorter breaks of two or three minutes bring back 99% to 96%, respectively.

The study used PPM data from all 48 PPM markets over a year.

You can read more about the study from this RAB Radio Sales Today article. Now get selling!

The Massachusetts Broadcasters Association and 45 other State Broadcasters Associations joined in filing comments in response to the FCC’s proposal to require television stations to post the bulk of their public inspection files, including their political files, on the FCC’s website.

We supported the Commission’s proposal to exclude from any online public inspection file requirement the multitude of letters and emails that television stations receive from the public. We also expressed support for the Commission’s decision to offer to host the public inspection files on the FCC’s own website, but qualified our support by urging the Commission, as we did in earlier stages of the proceeding, to give stations the option of using the FCC’s website or its own website, with appropriate links to the FCC’s website, for their online public inspection files.

The State Associations did raise serious concerns however. We expressed great concern that the Commission’s apparent focus in the proceeding had changed, and inappropriately so, from the FCC’s longstanding emphasis on encouraging local dialogues between local residents and their local stations about their programming service to a new emphasis on oversight of television stations by non-local, and in fact, distant researchers and public advocacy groups that have no local ties to or personal knowledge of the individual communities served by local television stations.

We also registered our strong objection to the Commission’s proposal to require television stations to place their political files online, including forcing stations to catalogue the political file materials by “subfolders” and “subdivisions,” in effect to standardizing the management of traffic at television stations. We pointed out that there is no industry standard for managing traffic because many television stations use their own in-house trafficking software and many others use the products of at least fourteen outside vendors. In addition, we opposed the Commission’s proposal to expand substantially the types of “sponsors” that must be identified on the lists that stations have long been required to maintain in their public files. We argued that not only will each of these proposed new requirements be extraordinarily burdensome, they reflect a new “gotcha” regulatory attitude of the Commission with researchers, public advocacy groups and the Commission playing “stop watch” roulette if station political files go online or if the list of a television station’s “sponsors” must be expanded. Given that the base fines for violations of the FCC’s political file and public inspection file rules are $9,000 and $10,000, respectively, we pointed out that the FCC will have a strong incentive to encourage the filing of “stop watch” complaints as well as to make adverse “willful or repeated” findings notwithstanding the good faith efforts of broadcasters.

The State Associations urged the Commission not to adopt an online political file requirement or to expand the types of sponsorships that must be listed by television stations in their public inspection files. In the alternative, we suggested that the Commission defer a decision on whether to adopt an online political file requirement for television stations pending the outcome of its action with respect to replacing FCC Form 355. We also urged the Commission, if it still intends to adopt an online public inspection file requirement for television stations, to conduct a pilot program before finalizing any online public inspection file rule as well as provide a reasonable phase-in period for compliance. Furthermore, with the adoption of an online public inspection file requirement, we requested the Commission to remove as unnecessary the public file certification question from its application for renewal of broadcast licenses on FCC Form 303-S, as well as to reduce the base forfeiture amount for public inspection file violations which will become even more arbitrary and capricious in an online public file world.

Lastly, to acknowledge the high priority of dialogues between local viewers and local stations, the State Associations urged the Commission to require all persons and organizations having complaints about a station’s programming to certify, in any complaint, objection or petition filed with the Commission, that they have already made their concerns known, in writing or by email, to the affected station(s) and that they have not received either any response from the station(s) or a satisfactory response (along with the reasons why the response was not satisfactory) before the FCC will consider the matters contained in the person’s or organization’s complaint, objection or petition.
